Sealants

When it comes to living a healthy and happy life, it might be surprising just how important taking good care of your teeth and your overall oral health is. In fact, ensuring that your oral health is good is one of the most vital parts of leading an overall healthy life. This is one of the reasons why frequent trips to the dentist are so important! They help you keep your teeth in good condition, which helps to ensure that you never have to experience the drop in quality of life that can come from large scale tooth extractions. To help protect your teeth even further, you should consider asking us about sealants.

What is a dental sealant?

When you hear the word “sealant”, you probably immediately focus on the “seal” part of it, right? A sealant, aptly named, is a kind of coating that essentially seals your teeth so that they do not decay. You can think of a sealant as a kind of protective cap for your tooth – one that locks away the enamel and protects it from the damage that food and drinks can cause. This can help you develop fewer cavities and experience an overall lower prevalence of tooth decay than individuals who do not use the sealant.

Do I need to get sealants?

While you don’t necessarily need to have a sealant applied to your teeth, it is a good idea. It is an especially good idea for children, as sealing their permanent teeth right away can help avoid the development of cavities and other issues at a young age. This can help them make it to adolescence and adulthood with healthy, strong teeth that have yet to experience issues. This is a boon, and will help your children better maintain their oral health for life. Even adults can benefit from sealants. They can help keep our teeth safe from decay. This is especially true if you know that you have recurring cavities or that your teeth otherwise seem to be prone to developing issues.

How is a dental sealant applied?

A dental sealant is easy to apply, and don’t worry – there’s no discomfort involved at all! In fact, a dental sealant is probably one of the simplest dental procedures you can undergo. A dentist or dental hygienist will quickly paint the sealant on your teeth, where it will form to your teeth and harden into a seal that protects them from damage. The entire process takes only a few moments, making it a time effective preventative procedure.

How long does a dental sealant last?

It might seem like a dental sealant is something that will need to be reapplied often, however this is not the case! Dental sealants can last around 10 years with proper care, although it is always a good idea to have us double check them at cleanings to ensure there are no cracks or chips that could compromise their effectivity.
